Joel Mchale was born Joel Edward Mchale, on , in Rome, Italy, to father Jack McHale and mother Laurie. His mother is from Vancouver, Canada, and his father comes from Chicago, Illinois. He was raised Catholic.

Joel was raised in Mercer Island, Washington, where he attended Mercer Island High School. Joel Mchale received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington History, in .
