A MAN suffered serious injuries after a six-car crash closed the M11 motorway near Stansted Airport.
Emergency services were scrambled after the smash between junctions 10 and 8 on the M11 southbound this morning.
An air ambulance has flown one man to hospital with serious injuries after landing on the northbound carriageway.
Paramedics freed a driver from their car after they became trapped, Essex Fire Service said.
The crash, which happened at around 8.30am, involved four cars, one LGV and one HGV.
Three other people were treated at the scene and one was taken to hospital with chest pains, East of England Ambulance Service said.
A spokesman added: "We sent three ambulance crews and an air ambulance to the scene.
"We treated four patients, three male and one female. Two were discharged at the scene.
"One was treated for chest pains and taken to hospital by land ambulance. His condition isn't thought to be serious.
"Another man was treated for head injuries and he was taken to hospital by air ambulance. His condition is believed to be serious."
Huge delays have been reported and motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes.
Highways England said the closures are expected to be in place for some time.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "Police are currently at the scene of a multi-vehicle RTC on the southbound M11 between junctions 8 and 9, near Stansted Airport.
"A man has been flown to hospital with what is believed to be serious injuries.
"Drivers are advised that traffic on the southbound M11 has been stopped and the northbound carriageway was closed to allow for the landing of the air ambulance."
