My $20 bill looked weird so I checked it - it's worth 100s more thanks to printing error that 'adds

WHEN Americans use paper money, they rarely take a close look at the details.

Some quirks in bills can make them extremely valuable, leading some to ask social media what their odd bills are worth.

One TikTok user posted a video with an unusual $20 bill, asking the internet if it’s worth much.

Rare coin influencer Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) shared the video to weigh in.

THE BILL

The video starts with an image of a bill that appears to have the design of both sides printed on one.

“This $20 bill is see through, did I find something valuable?” the original poster asked.

“It really looks weird,” they said.

According to Miller, the unusual appearance is thanks to an “offset printing error.”

These errors are introduced when the bill is printed, and the result is that the mirror image of one side appears through the other side.

While this example was a $20 bill, it can happen with any paper money.

Its rarity makes it a valuable collector’s item.

“This is a very valuable printing error that would add value to any bill,” Miller said.

Miller then showed similar examples to give the bill’s owner an estimate of how much it could be worth.

Without taking the bill through any certification process, bills like this can be worth around $100.

If the bill is certified, its value can be doubled.

Miller showed one offset printed bill that sold for $219 thanks in part to its certification by the Professional Coin Grading Service, which Miller represents.

However, some bills with these errors are worth even more.

One particularly high-quality $1 bill with this error sold for over $2,600.

MORE RARE MONEY

While this bill was spotted for its unusual appearance, many other valuable details are harder to spot.

One subtle detail is the serial number, which is used to identify each bill.

A bill with a rare serial number can be valuable just for its novelty.

For example, one bill with the number 88888888 was called “modern day treasure.”

It sold for 72 times the face value.

A bill with the serial number 22222222 sold for $15,000 earlier this year.
