TRANSGENDER lags at a jail for male sex offenders have won the right to order make-up and underwear from the same catalogues handed out in women’s prisons.
The inmates at HMP Bure in Norfolk have been granted “full access” to cosmetics, bras, knickers and other clothes.
It followed complaints to staff at meetings at the 650-offender prison.
An HM Chief Inspector of Prisons report said the prison had now “provided the full shopping list from women’s prisons”.
The report also praised the category C nick, home to 41 lifers, for its “wide range of posters” in the jail promoting “equality and diversity”.
A recent Prison Service Instruction named 'The Care and Management of Transsexual Prisoners' states:
"A male to female transsexual prisoner should be allowed to wear female clothing, regardless of any restrictions.
"This approach is necessary to ensure that such prisoners can live in the gender role that they identify with."
It adds: "Make up that is vital to presenting in the acquired gender, such as foundation to cover up beard growth, may not be restricted.
"It may be helpful to explain this to other prisoners who are required to wear prison uniform."
